Speaking about Robert Bly's translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's poem 'The Swan', David Whyte describes the clumsy, waddling awkwardness of the walking swan. Lumbering from foot to foot with its swaggering weight contorting its rear end, it looks uncomfortable. The transformation occurs when the swan lowers itself into the elemental waters. What before was a clumsy, awkward bird, becomes a serene, magnificent and graceful being. Many of us spend much of life feeling awkward: feeling that we don't quite fit into that role or hole! Having some kind of elemental practice that we can lower ourselves into can therefore be nourishing and life-affirming indeed. We each need to find the transformational element that brings us to life; otherwise we might spend our lives trying to cover up our awkwardness with distracting behaviours and/or putting our energies into trying to hide it. Why not give 5Rhythms a go? It might just be the transformational element that brings you to life.
