Meredith Davies was the first teacher to start a weekly 5Rhythms class in Melbourne in 2003. Five years later Madhuma Thompson began a second weekly class and initiated a monthly Sweat Your Prayers, and now more than a decade later, with Meredith’s husband David Juriansz joining the teaching field, they have grown a huge dancing tribe. The weekly ‘Tuesday Tsunami Wave’ in North Fitzroy may be one of the biggest weekly 5R classes in the world ~ a pulsating, deep ride for over 150 dancers. With sometimes 6 classes a week, workshops with international teachers, 3 local teachers and more in training, Melbourne is a vibrant 5Rhythms dance community.

5Rhythms is a catalytic dance practice, based on the creative flow of nature. Dancing each of the rhythms Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness offers us a map for understanding our body’s own inner waves, the rhythms of nature, and the rhythms of the creative process.
In 2019 we are continuing to work through the book by Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estes - Women Who Run with the Wolves. We will be working with one archetypal feminine story at a time - and using it as our basis for an embodied inquiry and dance. Running with Wolves - Women's 5Rhythms - offers us a monthly ritual to honour ourselves, and our sisters. It's a bookclub with a twist, a turn, and a hop. It's a women's circle that moves the talk, and invites compassion and empathy - via the shaping and rhythmic qualities of the expressive body.
Just like the wolf, the female psyche has often been misunderstood, feared, and hunted to near extinction.
Only now is the feminine way of being returning to our awareness.
In this workshop we'll be reminded of our cyclic nature,
of the ebbs and flows of our creativity and of our spiralling unfolding pathway of our lives. We’ll dance and move together, to embody and reconnect with our physicality and to witness and honour this with our sisters.
This is your invitation to track the movements and desires of your animal self, your deeper wisdom and to return to your fur-covered sensing self. This is your invitation to listen deeply. Do you hear the call?
Natalie Poole is a certified 5Rhythms teacher, Dance Movement Therapist, mother, birth attendant and Intimacy Co-ordinator. She has worked in schools and various settings including universities, detention centres, clinical settings, and film sets. She teaches weekly classes in Melbourne and regular workshops in Australia and Europe.
Natalie has woven new maps for women to dance through their lunar/menstrual energies; their birthing/creative energies; and their empowerment/archetypal life energies and life cycles. Through her studies with Alexandra Pope (The Red School), Rhea Dempsey (Birthing Wisdom) and working with the archetypal stories of Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estes (Women Who Run with the Wolves), Natalie has absorbed the current principles of female wisdom, and interlaced these with the simple, and yet potent and catalysing map of Gabrielle Roth's 5Rhythms dance. Together these new maps form a carefully curated, sensitively synthesised, and richly multi-layered tapestry that form the basis for Natalie's women's moving medicine work. Dancing through, and embodying these maps, nurtures our well-being, our creativity and expression, and re-connects us to our essence and life-force.SCHRIJF JE VANDAAG IN!
In Waves classes, we dance the 5Rhythms time and time again, so that we deepen our capacity to be fluid and grounded with everything that life reveals to us. Sometimes we find ourselves on the dance floor in a puddle of tears or experiencing moments of rage or even despair. This is a natural and normal experience. We can spiral into resistance, shame and apathy or we can use movement to access our true power. This Heartbeat Intensive will provide you with the embodiment tools to respect and transform these emotional moments. This is a life changing practice. Heartbeat® work enables us to claim the vital energy of old unacknowledged feelings and be surprised and refreshed by new ones. We learn to “lean in” and not resist or indulge our emotional world. In this workshop we will dance a lot and witness each other, moving with Fear, Anger, Sadness, Joy and Compassion. This fosters acceptance for the vital energy that emotion gifts us.SCHRIJF JE VANDAAG IN!
